English: Incomplete Early-Medieval copper alloy gilt escutcheon or mount, probably from horse harness, with a small area of damage at the edge. It measures 32.33mm in diameter, is max.2.73mm thick and weighs 10.86g. The mount has a raised rim (from which the gilding, elsewhere thick on the object, has worn away) with a step flanking it on the outside edge. This step is decorated with an engraved line. At the centre of the mount is a domed boss (which has also lost its gilding) with a rib around, decorated with tiny punch marks/ moulded decoration, perhaps in a cable design? A rib with similar decoration flanks the inside edge of the raised rim. Between the rim and the boss the brooch is taken up with a band of (?moulded) devolved triple-strand Style II animal interlace. The reverse of the mount, which is flat, shows five rivet holes, four of which (aligned in a square) have an in situ rivet. Two of these rivets are c.1.8mm in diameter while the other two are c.4mm in diameter. One of the larger holds beneath it a fragment of gilt sheet copper alloy. Gilding also remains at the very edge in places, and the area inside the square of rivets is rough, perhaps suggesting the edges of the mount would have been seen from the reverse. The fifth rivet hole is in a line with one of the larger and one of the smaller rivets, and is 1.23mm in diameter. The mount is very similar to an example from Spelsbury, Oxfordshire (Macgregor and Bolick 1993, p.239, no.47.3), which has similar decoration and rivet-arrangement. This is dated to the 7th century.
