English: A complete copper alloy disc probable pendant, of probable Early Modern dating (AD 1800 to AD 2000).
The pendant is circular in shape. A small sub circular perforation (hole) is present towards the top of the disc. It has an internal diameter of 1.4 mm. The front of the disc has been decorated with an engraved design. At the centre is an eight lobed flower, within a circular tressure. Around this is a two strand interlaced design consisting of two interlocked square with endented sides. Between each strand, diagonal hatching is present. Foliate (leaf like) designs are present around the outside edge of the interlaced design. The reverse is plain and undecorated. Traces of gilding are present, along with multiple filemarks. No trace of an attachment for a pin is present. The probable disc pendant has a diameter of 37.9 mm and is 1.3 mm thick. It weighs 6.3 g. The probable pendant is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Although it is tentatively possible that it may be part of an Early Medieval saucer brooch, it is significantly more probable that it is an artisan style pendant, of Early Modern dating. The style of the decoration is inconsistent with it being Early Medieval in dating. |
