A vacantspace occurs between the second and third, pro-bably reserved for the purpose of future honourto some personage, and might in the interimLave been planted with trees. The gladiatorialcombats^ upon the tomb of Scaurus have beenspoken of page 104. Horace probably alludesto such representation in the following lines : Fulvi Rutubseque Aut Placideiani, contento poplite mirorPraelia, rubrica picta aut carbone; velut siRe A era pugiient, feriant, vitentque moventesAnna viri. It has been questioned whether the inscriptionapplied to this to;nb originally belonged to it.The slab upon which it is engraved certainly fitsthe place, although not there found : at all eventsthe matter cannot be worth controversy. Thigmonument, as well as its cylindrical neighbour,was probably surmounted with a statue. The pediment upon the rear of the maceria of Cal-ventius Quietus, and figures supporting an unin-scribed tablet, will be observed. Between thistomb and that of Naevoleia, is the panel in thewall containing the inscription, page 102. The little acroteria, in some instances bearing bassirelievi, and which appear so frequent aboutthese sepulchres, are curious. Some tombs re-maining in the necropolis of the ancient city ofCnidus are ornamented in a similar manner.Places of sepulture were originally surroundedwith a fence or paling of wood; the standardsat intervals, so necessary for its stability, werepossibly the prototypes of these pinnacles: andfrom them were probably suspended the garlandsaad wreaths with which, at stated periods, thesepulchre was adorned. The smallness of thedoor-ways has been before noticed. The secondis only 3 feet 3 inches high. 120 POMPEIANA. PLATE IX.
