On the east bank of the Mississippi, in Tennessee, stood Fort Pillow,erected by the Confederates in 1861, and greatly strengthened by GeneralBeauregard in 1862, but abandoned when that commander evacuated Cor-inth, after the battle of Shiloh. In the fortifications were 557 men, ofwhom 262 were negroes. Maj. L. F. Booth commanded. It was the anniversary of the beginning of the war at Fort Sumter.Through the night rain had fallen. Daylight was dawning when the pick-ets in the woods east of the fortification saw a Confederate April 12, 1864. „ . „. . . , force approaching, lorrests command, Captain Smithscompany, of Missouri cavalry was in advance, guided by a citizen wholived near by, and who knew just where the pickets were stationed. OPENING OF THE YEAR 1864. 41 sprang from their tents and log-huts, quickly formed, and rushed to thebreastworks. There were two 10-pounder Parrott-guns, two 12-pounderhowitzers, and two 6-pounder rifled cannon. The Confederates dismount-ed from their jaded horses and advanced ; McCullochs brigade from thesouth, Bells brigade from the north. The artillery on both sides openedfire together with the Confederate sharp-shooters. The Confederatesnumbered several thousand. At nine oclock Forrest arrived. He hadridden seventy-two miles during twenty-four hours. Soon after his ar-rival the Union commander, Major Booth, was killed, and the commanddevolved upon Major Bradford. The gunboat New Era was lying in theMississippi, and sent its shells up the ravine south of the fort, firing,during the forenoon, two hundred and eighty-two rounds of shell, shrap-nel, and canister, which, with the fire from the fortifications, kept theConfederates at bay.
