Аннотация издательства

The official history of Australia’s involvement in the Second World War represents one of the longest and largest historical endeavours that Australia has ever seen. The enterprise began in January 1943 with the appointment of Gavin Long as General Editor. The 22 volumes, written by 14 authors, were published by the Memorial over a 25-year period between 1952 and 1977.

This volume continues and concludes the story of Australian airmen who served in the war against Germany and Italy. In this period generally about 15,000 Australians were serving in or beside the RAF, a proportion of them being in 18 Australian squadrons and the remainder in a large number of RAF units. The volume opens with an account of the plans and preparations for the invasion of Europe and then describes the operations in support of the advancing Allied armies, the accompanying strategic bombing offensive, the ceaseless work of Coastal Command and the varied operations in the Mediterranean zone.

The book concludes with an account of the problems of organisation and rehabilitation overcome during the unscrambling and repatriation of the Australian contingent, and with a chapter on the experiences of evaders and prisoners of war.
