Wikimedia Polska scholarships for Wikimania 2014

Dear Colleagues, Wikimania 2014 kicks off in London, UK in just over three months. As in previous years, Wikimedia Polska, Wikimedia's local chapter from Poland, is going to fund four Wikimania scholarships for non-Polish Wikimedians from Central and Eastern Europe (including the Asian part of the former Soviet Union). Our scholarships cover flights, accommodation (without meals), insurance and conference fee. Deadline for scholarship applications is 13th of May (23:59 Warsaw time). From March 16 to April 15 we will organise the Catalan Culture Challenge, a Wikipedia editing contest in which victory will go to those who start and improve the greatest number of articles about 50 key figures of Catalan culture. You can take part by creating or expanding articles on these people in your native language (or any other one you speak). It would be lovely to have you on board. :-)

I just wanted to let you know, so you could mark your calendars if interested, that there are two IRC office hours scheduled to discuss VisualEditor in March.

The first will be held on Monday, 17 March at 1500 UTC and the second will be held on Wednesday, 19 March at 01:00 UTC. (See meta for time conversion links.)

Double writing week about the Caucasus (nl-wiki)

The coloured area is the area of the Caucasus writing weeks on the Dutch Wikipedia.

Hello! In earlier months, we have organized several writing weeks on the Dutch Wikipedia. As in the next month in the Caucasus area of Sochi, Russia, the 2014 Winter Olympics are organized, we organize afterwards during two weeks (22 February-9 March) a double writing week on the Dutch Wikipedia about the Caucasus. This is the coloured area shown on the right, including the 9 subdivisions of Russia, and the countries Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. If you have any suggestions we certainly should write an article about, please tell us!
It is also possible for you to organize a writing week (or double) at your Wikipedia about the area of the Dutch speaking community mostly comes from: Belgium and the Netherlands.
We are currently working on the preparations of our double writing week to have a better coverage of this area of the world, what includes a project page and a page with many wanted articles on the Dutch Wikipedia about this area of the world.

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.
